چکیده

Many phenomena exhibit great regularity without being periodic. This is modeled using the notion of \pseudo-periodic" functions and the related \ -norm", which allow complex repetitive phenomena to be represented as a periodic process plus a set of parameters that de ne the deviations of the process from true periodicity. Applications to sunspot data and to heartbeat analysis explore practical uses and limitations of the method.

Distinct roles for onset and sustained activity in the neuronal code for temporal periodicity and acoustic envelope shape.

Auditory neurons are selective for temporal sound information that is important for rhythm, pitch, and timbre perception. Traditional models assume that periodicity information is represented either by the discharge rate of tuned modulation filters or synchrony in the discharge pattern. Compelling evidence for an invariant rate or synchrony code, however, is lacking and neither of these models ...

Generating the Pseudo-Powers of a Word

The notions of power of word, periodicity and primitivity are intrinsically connected to the operation of catenation, that dynamically generates word repetitions. When considering generalizations of the power of a word, other operations will be the ones that dynamically generate such pseudo-repetitions. In this paper we define and investigate the operation of θ-catenation that gives rise to the...

Words with unbounded periodicity complexity

If an infinite non-periodic word is uniformly recurrent or is of bounded repetition, then the limit of its periodicity complexity is infinity. Moreover, there are uniformly recurrent words with the peri-odicity complexity arbitrarily high at infinitely many positions.

Neural coding of periodicity in marmoset auditory cortex.

Pitch, our perception of how high or low a sound is on a musical scale, crucially depends on a sound's periodicity. If an acoustic signal is temporally jittered so that it becomes aperiodic, the pitch will no longer be perceivable even though other acoustical features that normally covary with pitch are unchanged. Previous electrophysiological studies investigating pitch have typically used onl...

Real-World Repetition Estimation by Div, Grad and Curl

We consider the problem of estimating repetition in video, such as performing push-ups, cutting a melon or playing violin. Existing work shows good results under the assumption of static and stationary periodicity. As realistic video is rarely perfectly static and stationary, the often preferred Fourier-based measurements is inapt. Instead, we adopt the wavelet transform to better handle non-st...
